FAQ

  • How can I book a tour?

You can book a tour directly through our website which connects with the tour providers, or you can contact the tour providers directly to organise a date and time for your tour.

Contact details of each tour provider are shown within the tour pages.

  • I'm arriving via Spain, where is best to park?

To avoid border queues and traffic, it's advisable to park on the Spanish side in La Linea de la Concepcion. There are plenty of car parks to choose from, including one directly opposite the border near McDonalds and Burger King (called Focona).

  • I'm arriving via the border, do I need my Passport?

It is mandatory to present your ID (Europeans) or passport (non-Europeans) to enter and exit the territory of Gibraltar.

Please check if you need a visa at http://www.gibraltarborder.gi/visa.

If you are a British resident in Spain, please remember to bring your NIE or TIE. If you are holidaying in Spain then please bring your hotel booking reservation too to avoid any issues with the border guards on the Spanish side (Brexit controls).

  • What is the meeting point for arriving via the border?

Upon entering Gibraltar through Passport Control (ensure you have your passport or ID card), you will first pass by a red British telephone box. Continue walking straight for 80 meters, passing the taxi rank. On the left side of the road, you will see a large car park (where the buses park). Use the zebra crossing to safely reach the car park. Our tour guide and vehicle will be waiting for you there, with a sign displaying your name on the windshield.

If you have any problems our tour guides will be available via Whatsapp to help.

  • How do I pay?

You can pay with either card or cash. Card payments incur a 1.69% fee.

All prices are listed in GBP.

In Gibraltar, we use the pound (GBP) but also accept Euros and Dollars. The price for tours paid in Euros or Dollars will be based on the exchange rate of the day.

If needed, we can stop at an ATM for cash withdrawals.

If you prefer to pay in advance, we can provide our bank account details for an online transfer.

  • What's the difference between a private tour and the cable car?

Private tours with our providers are all done in air conditioned luxury mercedes passenger vehicles for up to 8 people, and you can be picked up and dropped off at your chosen location.

The benefit of a private tour is that you can travel between the sights and attractions much more easily as there is a long distance between them if walking up and down the roads on the Upper Rock. Private tours are especially advantageous in summer months when the heat can be a factor where walking up hills in the sun with high temperatures can be exhausting.

The cable car also depends on the weather (closed during windy days), it can be closed for maintenance and there can be long queues, especially during peak season. A private tour avoids these issues.

Also with the Cable Car and the long distance between attractions, most cable car users just visit the top of The Rock to see the viewing platform and monkeys, but miss out on the other sights such as St Michael's Cave, The Great Siege Tunnels, World War II Tunnels, Moorish Castle, Windsor Suspension bridge and many more.

  • What languages are the tours in?

All of our Gibraltar tour guides are bilingual in both English and Spanish. Our vehicles are also equipped with a multimedia system offering the tour in French, German, Polish, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese and Czech.

The ultimate way to see Gibraltar! Spend a whole day with your assigned private tour guide to have the fullest experience of everything that Gibraltar has to offer! Driven in style with a luxury Mercedes 8 seater vehicle, with shared local history and stories of the famous Rock of Gibraltar!

The Pillars of Hercules

Our tour begins with the renowned Pillars of Hercules, where you can marvel at the stunning vistas of North Africa across the sea. From this vantage point, you'll see the confluence of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, all from a viewpoint above Europa Point.

St Michael's Cave

Next, we'll head up to explore St Michael's Cave, a natural wonder that attracts thousands of visitors annually. Wander through its vast caverns and be awed by this geological marvel.

O'Hara's Battery

Located at the highest point of the Rock of Gibraltar, O'Hara's Battery is an artillery battery in this British Overseas Territory. It offers a glimpse into Gibraltar's military past and panoramic views of the surrounding area.

Top of the Rock

Your private tour guide will then take you to the Top of the Rock, where you'll be treated to breathtaking views of Gibraltar. Here, you'll also get to spend time with the famous monkeys, observing their playful antics and social behaviors. If you're lucky, one might even hop on your back, providing a unique photo opportunity!

Skywalk Glass Viewing Platform

While at the Top of the Rock, you'll experience the Skywalk Glass Viewing Platform. Inaugurated by Star Wars legend Mark Hamill, this platform lets you stand on clear glass above a sheer drop, offering stunning views of Gibraltar's east side.

Windsor Suspension Bridge

On June 21, 2016, Chief Minister Fabian Picardo opened the Windsor Suspension Bridge along the Royal Anglian Way. Spanning 71 meters and crossing a 50-meter-deep ravine, this bridge connects an abandoned battery with Hayne's Cave Battery, making it a thrilling adventure and a great spot for photos.

The Great Siege Tunnels

Next, we will drive to the north side of the Rock to explore the Great Siege Tunnels. These tunnels, rich with history, tell the story of Gibraltar under siege in the 18th century. They are filled with tales of historic wars and the incredible efforts that went into their construction.

The Moorish Castle

The Moorish Castle, whose construction began in the 8th century AD, encompasses a large area extending down to the town. Its Tower of Homage is the highest of its era on the Iberian Peninsula, and the Qasbah is the largest in the region. The castle played a crucial role during the Muslim invasion of the Iberian Peninsula and housed Gibraltar's prison until 2010.

City Under Siege Exhibition

This exhibition showcases scenes depicting the lives of Gibraltar's civilian population during the siege. It features fascinating stories of the first British settlers and their struggles to adapt to life in Gibraltar.

World War II Tunnels

The most extensive tunneling in Gibraltar's history occurred during World War II, significantly expanding the tunnel network from 7 miles (11 km) to 25 miles (40 km). These tunnels played a vital role in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean theatres of the war.

The 100 Ton Gun

In the late 1800s, the British naval authorities built four massive 100-ton guns, two of which were installed in Gibraltar and the other two in Malta. These guns were part of Britain's efforts to secure its holdings.

Europa Point

Located at the southernmost tip of Gibraltar, Europa Point features the iconic Europa Point Lighthouse and offers spectacular views across the Strait of Gibraltar to Northern Africa and Morocco.

Catalan Bay & 360º Drive around The Rock

The tour includes a comprehensive 360º drive around the Rock of Gibraltar, offering an all-encompassing view of its stunning coastline. This scenic route passes significant landmarks and picturesque spots, including the charming fishing village of Catalan Bay, dramatic Jurassic sand dunes, and historic water catchments.

Famous Runway

The tour also takes you under Gibraltar’s runway via the modern Kingsway Tunnel, leading to the airport and the Spanish border. Here, you can observe Spanish Customs at work and enjoy unique views that blend Gibraltar's distinctive scenery with glimpses into Spain, providing a fascinating cross-border perspective.

Gibraltar Tour by Inside-Out Rock Tours

The Gibraltar Ultimate Tour has 12 stops and takes around 7hrs

  • Pillars of Hercules
  • St Michael's Cave
  • O'Hara's Battery (Highest Point)
  • Top of the Rock with Skywalk & Monkeys
  • Great Siege Tunnels
  • City Under Siege Exhibition
  • WWII Tunnels
  • Moorish Castle
  • Tax Free Shopping + Lunch
  • 100 Ton Gun
  • Europa Point
  • 360º Drive around Gibraltar (Catalan Bay)
  • Drive under runway (Kingsway Tunnel)

The Pillars of Hercules

Our first stop is the iconic Pillars of Hercules. Here, you can soak in the breathtaking vistas of North Africa and Morocco. This vantage point allows you to witness the confluence of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, marking the sole gateway to the Mediterranean. You will also find yourself at Europe Point, the southernmost tip of Europe.

St Michael's Cave

Next, we venture into St Michael’s Cave, a natural wonder visited by thousands each year. The cave's vast chambers are easily navigable, with steps providing simple access. This spectacular formation arose from rainwater percolating through limestone over millions of years, creating a weak carbonic acid that gradually dissolved the rock.

In 2021, a new lighting system named "The Awakening" was introduced, enhancing the cave's natural beauty. This immersive light and sound show breathes life into the ancient caverns, illuminating sculptures and unraveling their hidden stories.

O'Hara's Battery (Highest Point)

Following our exploration of St Michael’s Cave, we will ascend to O'Hara's Battery, situated at the Rock of Gibraltar's highest point at 1383 feet. This historic artillery battery, near Lord Airey's Battery, was built in 1890 on the site of a former watchtower known as O'Hara's Folly.

Named after Governor Charles O'Hara, the battery originally housed a 6-inch breech-loading gun, later replaced by a 9.2-inch Mark X BL gun in 1901. The battery saw action during World War II and was last fired during training in 1976. Now refurbished and open to the public, O'Hara's Battery is listed with the Gibraltar Heritage Trust.

Top of the Rock Skywalk

After O’Hara’s Battery, we will proceed to the top of the Rock, where you will experience two main attractions: the Skywalk glass viewing platform and the resident monkeys.

The Skywalk, once a military lookout, has been transformed into a modern glass platform offering spectacular 360º panoramic views of the Mediterranean. The experience provides a thrilling sense of freedom and exhilaration.

Monkeys Visit (Ape's Den)

A short walk from the Skywalk brings us to the Upper Apes Den, home to the only Barbary Macaque Apes in Europe. Over 200 apes in six packs roam the upper rock nature reserve. According to legend, Sir Winston Churchill ordered the apes' population to be replenished in 1942, believing that Gibraltar would remain under British rule as long as these apes inhabited the Rock.

The Great Siege Tunnels

Next, we will drive to the Rock's north side to explore the Great Siege Tunnels. These tunnels, hand-carved during the Great Siege of 1779-1783, were created to defend Gibraltar from Spanish and French forces. The site offers a fascinating glimpse into Gibraltar's siege history.

City Under Siege Exhibition

Following the tunnels, we will visit the City Under Siege Exhibition. The most notable feature of this building is the graffiti on its walls, dating back to 1726. It is believed that soldiers on guard duty would draw to stay awake, as falling asleep was punishable by death.

World War II Tunnels

Our next stop is the World War II Tunnels. In 1940, with Germany and Italy posing a threat, Britain constructed an extensive network of tunnels in Gibraltar. This "fortress within a fortress" served as a city within the Rock, used by figures like Churchill, Sikorski, and De Gaulle during the war.

Moorish Castle

We then visit the Moorish Castle, a medieval fortification on the Rock's eastern elevation. Originally built in 1160 CE and later ransacked by the Spanish, the castle was rebuilt in the 14th century by Abu-l-Hasan. Today, visitors can explore the restored castle, admire its ancient walls, and see the cannon dents.

Tax-Free Shopping and Lunch

After the castle visit, we will drive through Gibraltar's old town to Casemates Square, the start of Main Street. Here, you will have 1 to 1.5 hours for lunch and shopping, exploring the narrow streets of the charming old town.

100 Ton Gun

Post-lunch, we head to see the 100 Ton Gun. Built in the late 1800s by the British naval authorities, two of these massive guns were installed in Gibraltar and two in Malta to secure their holdings.

Europa Point

Our next destination is Europa Point, the southernmost part of Gibraltar. From here, you can enjoy stunning views across the Strait of Gibraltar to North Africa and Morocco, as well as the bay of Gibraltar and nearby Spanish towns.

360º Drive Around Gibraltar's Coastline (Visiting Catalan Bay)

We will then take a scenic drive around Gibraltar's coastline, stopping at various viewpoints along the way. Highlights include Catalan Bay, Jurassic sand dunes, and the old water catchments.

Airport Runway

The tour continues under the airport runway via the new Kingsway Tunnel, heading towards the Spanish border where you can observe Spanish Customs at work.

Gibraltar Tour by Inside-Out Rock Tours

The Panoramic Tour has 3 stops and takes around 1hr

  • Pillars of Hercules (South Views)
  • Top of the Rock with Monkeys (East & West Views)
  • Princess Caroline's Battery (North Views)

The Pillars of Hercules

One of the highlights of this tour in Gibraltar is visiting the Pillars of Hercules. Here, you can enjoy stunning views of Morocco in North Africa. You'll see where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea, the only entrance to the Mediterranean. You'll also be at Europa Point, the southernmost point of Europe.

Ape's Den

Next we'll travel to the top of Gibraltar where we'll spend some time with Gibraltar’s famous monkeys! The Barbary Macaque apes, the only ones in Europe, live in the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. Currently, there are over 200 apes in six groups roaming the area. According to legend, in 1942, the population of these apes dropped to just seven, and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill ordered their numbers to be increased. It's said that as long as these apes are on the Rock of Gibraltar, it will remain under British rule.

Breathtaking Views of the North Side

From the top of the Rock, we will drive to the north side to enjoy spectacular views. You can see the airstrip runway near the airport, which is right beside the border with Spain.

Moorish Castle and Old Town of Gibraltar

As we drive down from the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, we'll pass by the Moorish Castle. You can see the history and battle scars from cannonball shots during the wars between the Moors and the Spanish. The Moorish Castle is a medieval fortification built in 1160 CE and was ransacked by the Spanish between 1309-1333. The 'Tower of Homage' was rebuilt in the 14th century by Abu-l-Hasan. You'll be able to see the cannon dents in the castle walls.

As we leave the nature reserve, we'll drive through the old town of Gibraltar.
